Sawt Trio brings together three musicians whose artistic paths traverse continents and traditions:

• Jan Rzewski – saxophone

• Samir Bendimered – piano

Formed in Brussels, this unique chamber ensemble explores the intersection of oral traditions, classical heritage, and improvisation. Their name — sawt, meaning “voice” in Arabic — reflects their commitment to musical expression that transcends language.

🌍 A Journey Through Cultures

The Sawt Trio’s repertoire draws inspiration from a wide range of musical landscapes:

From J.S. Bach to Miles Davis, from Gabriel Fauré to Oum Kalthoum and Mohamed Abdel Wahab, the trio seamlessly weaves together elements of Western classical music, jazz, Arab-Andalusian traditions, and North African Gnawa rhythms.

Rather than blending these influences into a homogenous style, the trio allows each musical voice to retain its identity while participating in a larger conversation — an approach that creates music that is both rooted and open, intimate and exploratory.

🎤 Live Performances & Creation

Sawt Trio has performed in Belgium, Morocco, Algeria, and France, both in concert halls and cultural festivals. Each performance is a journey in itself, shaped by improvisation, shared intuition, and a deep respect for silence.

In 2012, the trio was central to the creation of the larger Ensemble Sawt, which later collaborated with singer Naziha Meftah on a tour of North African repertoires.
